NZ early childhood curriculum

the nz ece learning framework

Our centres are guided by the PrinciplesStrands and Goals of Te Whāriki, the NZ early childhood curriculum, which are summarised as:

  • The early childhood curriculum will empower our tamariki to learn and grow;
  • The early childhood curriculum will reflect the holistic way children learn and grow;
  • The wider world of the whanau and community is an integral part of the early childhood curriculum;
  • Children will learn through a responsive and reciprocal relationship with people, places and things.

Our aim is for children to journey along an education pathway (shown alongside), to grow up as confident and competent learners and communicators, healthy in mind, body and spirit, secure in their sense of belonging and in the knowledge that they make a valued contribution to society.

The curriculum is embedded in everything we do and forms the basis of how our teachers plan our programme to combine it with the interests that your child shows on a daily basis. Our teaching is child-initiated so our teachers will pick up on cues, emerging interests, and morning discussions about weekend / last night activities to try to extend these into our settings and other learning programmes for the day or into ongoing learning themes in our centre and from your own and your child’s (parent/child) aspirations.
